This work begins to expore how the 19th century religion of spirtualism conceptually undermined the contemporary gender roles and symbolism of femininity. The movement made the feminine into a conduit of transformative spirits as the female body became a site of confict. In a seance the respectable woman was able to become whoever she pleased from beyond the veil.
